I'm very pleased to write this letter in support of Duane Graves' film productions. I taught Duane in film studies courses
in 1997 through 1999, and I recently viewed a tape of his film/video production work over the years. Duane was far and away
one of the most promising students in our program, and I recommend him enthusiastically. He had a strong academic record,
and his productions show a firm grasp of cinematic skills on many levels.
In film studies, Duane was in my class for the required introductory course and for courses in Film History, Film Comedy, and
Documentary Film. His grades were mostly A's, which means that he is a great analytical thinker and writer. His essays are
generally perceptive, clear, and well-reasoned, but they also display real affection for the film medium. Duane's interest in film
goes far beyond that of the run-of-the-mill student.
A few words about his productions are in order also, because his main goals are in the production arena. His recent work is
impressive. It shows a maturity and control of the medium I have rarely seen in student work. A narrative piece in black-and-white
called "Saddle Trail," which Duane directed, shot, and edited, is one of my personal favorites. It creates a film noir kind of
atmosphere for a story set at an all-night gas station/convenience store and later on the road. The film shows an amazing eye
for expressive compositions and unexpected camera angles. The editing rhythm is fairly quick, and cuts are made to be seen, but
the abrupt style sets exactly the right pace for the images and mood of the piece. Already an accomplished imagemaker, Duane
should thrive in your production, and I think you will find him a delight to work with.
Duane has a personality that should lend itself well to film work, especially in production. He is very creative, but he's also
reserved and not given to displays of ego. I have found him to be very congenial and unassuming, but ready to talk endlessly
about anything to do with movies. His enthusiasm and creativity, coupled with his ability to work as a team member, should
make him a valuable addition to any production project. I recommend Duane most highly, and I hope you will contact me if I
can provide any additional information or answer any questions.
Signed
